The NCAA Soccer May Transfer Portal is Open: What You Need to Know (May 2026)

The May transfer portal window is now open for both men's and women's Division I soccer. If you're a college soccer player who has been weighing your options, today is the day the clock starts.

This fifteen-day window runs from May 1 to May 15, 2026, and is shared by both men's and women's programs. It is the second and final portal window of the academic year, offering players one more opportunity to explore a move before summer preseason preparation gets underway.

What Does "The Portal is Open" Actually Mean?

The transfer portal is the NCAA's official database where student athletes can formally declare their intention to explore opportunities at other programs. Once a player's name appears in the system, coaches at other colleges are legally permitted to make contact. Until that point, no outside coach can initiate a conversation.

To enter, an athlete must notify their school's compliance office in writing, typically by email. Once compliance receives the request, the school has up to two business days to add the player to the portal. From there, the recruiting process can begin.

How It Works by Division

The rules around when you can enter the portal vary depending on which division you play in.

Division I uses fixed windows for soccer. There are two each year: a thirty-day fall window that opens shortly after the NCAA championship selections, and this fifteen-day spring window running May 1 to 15. Outside of these dates, entering the portal generally requires a special waiver, which is not guaranteed. If your head coach was recently fired or resigned, you are entitled to a separate thirty-day window regardless of these standard dates, starting the day after the departure is announced.

Division II operates with no fixed windows at all. D2 soccer players can enter the transfer portal at any point during the year, giving them significantly more flexibility. Partial scholarships are available at D2 programs, though typically fewer full rides than at the D1 level.

Division III also has no restricted windows, so D3 athletes can enter at any time. It is worth noting that D3 programs do not offer athletic scholarships, but they can be excellent academic environments and still very competitive soccer programs.

Why May Matters for D1 Players

For Division I athletes specifically, this window carries real urgency. Coaches are finalising their rosters, scholarships are being reallocated, and decisions made now will directly affect the fall season. Players who enter early in the window give themselves the best chance of generating interest and having meaningful conversations before spots are filled.

For players finishing their freshman or sophomore year, this window is also an opportunity to course-correct if the original fit turned out to be wrong. That is not failure. It is exactly what the portal was designed for.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Regardless of Division

There is no obligation to transfer just because you enter the portal. Players can withdraw if they decide to stay, though once entered, your current coach is notified and the dynamic within the program can shift quickly.

Scholarships do not automatically transfer. Before committing to a new school, make sure you have a clear picture of what is on the table financially and academically.

Thinking About Transferring?

Navigating the transfer portal on your own is possible, but having the right support makes a significant difference. Knowing which programs have scholarship availability, understanding how to position yourself to coaches, and getting your profile in front of the right people quickly can be the difference between a good outcome and a great one.
